Kidulthood Clip

Kidulthood

Exercise_02
Analyse the clip of KIdulthood

Consider: Costume, Lighting, Props, Language, Camera work, Sound.

The clip we watched started off with a bunch of kids in school playing football on a muddy field, this shows that most of the kids there are not a high class because they are not too bothered about the clothes they wear getting dirty. Once this scene is finished it skips to a scene with of boys talking to some girls asking if they wanted to go to his party. This shows that he is a working clkais party shows he is trying to fit in with them and wants to be a part of them to prevent him from being bullied himself.

When break is over, a teacher comes out to get the kids back in class, but fails to do so. This is because of the way the students are that the teachers have no control over them. the way the kids dress and behave threatens the teachers which makes them have less control around them.

In this clip the language used by the kids is considered 'fake'. The reason for this is because they're not speaking proper English, they're using slang, but this slang spoken is called Jafaican, a mix between Jamaican and African accent.

The scene where Katie gets beaten up has a lot of different camera angles. It starts off with a handheld shot (eye level) of her getting dragged in the class room, from then on there are a lot of different shots and it switches rather fast from one to another. POV is used a lot in this scene, from Katie's view looking at the two girls beating her up.

There is a lot of Hip hop/rap music in this film, mainly because its based on school pupils and their type of music at that age is that music. n

When deciding what genre to make this film as, its clear when watching it that its aimed at teenagers, since near enough every character is a teen in this film, why wouldn't it be aimed at teens. But the problem is and also a lot of critics has stated this, is that when teens watch this they may feel the need to copy their use of language and behaviour. Another sort of audience to this film may be people who would like to change what is happening, stuff like this film happens in many schools and there may be people studying this film to see if they can come up with a way to change this.

The clothing worn by the teens are all loose clothing to make them feel big. Even in school some of them aren't even wearing school uniform, and even when they do, they are not wearing full uniform, their tie's are half done, their shirts are out, this is just what any ordinary high school is like.

The cinematography in the start of this clip has a lot of jump cuts, the camera is in the same angle but at a different shot, this is maybe to get the audience sucked into it and to not lose concentration on the film .

Kidulthood

In this poster, straight away you think of everyone in it as "wanna be gangsters".  Its a bunch of teens who would go round causing grief, vandalising, disruptive behaviour and bullying. But why do we think this just by looking at a poster. Well to start, it goes by the way they dress. All the boys are wearing dark clothing with most of them having hoods up. With this society when you see a teen wearing dark clothing and a hood up you automatically assume them as trouble, which is what you see in this picture. Also the location they are at, they are not in a public place full of people, no they look as if they are in a dark abandoned place where not many people go. But the most obvious is the boy at the back holding a bat. Now if you want a poster to show teens in a bad way and to make them look like they are trouble, then holding a bat is a good way of showing it. just by looking at this poster, the clothing, the body language and the bat it shows that its a film about a group of teens that are up to no good which is what the director would want.

"Love & Pride"

With the newspaper headline being titled 'Love&Pride' and below two separate images of Cheryl Cole & David Beckham, it straight away gives the audience an idea that David and Cheryl are having a relationship. Now people who believe this are called Dominant Readers, these are the people who believe what the papers say. Then there are people who like what the papers are saying about them, but are not too interested in it. And then there are oppositional readers who would read this front page and would just completely reject the message and not believe a thing they say

Some typical modes of address

Films - impersonal, audience rarely acknowledged. Spectator placed in privileged position of often knowing more than the characters. Audience addressed indirectly through narrative viewpoints. Plots usually resolved (closure).Little sense of author/producer outside credits. Audience invited in to experience another world.

Television - personal, direct address to viewer who is acknowledged. works to attract our attention because viewing can be casual, texts such as News, soaps, sitcoms refuse resolution (are continuous). Viewers assumed to be members of a family (see watershed, childrens slots etc.). As a national audience (see Queens xmas message, sports events etc.). More specialist audiences beginning to be addressed ( cable channels, C4 etc).

Radio - most personal/intimate, regional/local - variations in accent , tone and delivery. distinctive audiences , attempts to construct dialogue with audience (phone ins). Access (‘your station’). Use of jingles to establish stations sense of identity.

Magazines - direct address through text and images, front page important in establishing identity. can appeal to different aspects of personality e.g. womens mags can appeal to woman as friend, mother, wife,      worker, lover, individual etc. Visual appeal is important.

Newspapers - Broadsheets - impersonal , formal , detached. Subdued tone, non participatory and less direct than tabloids. Tabloids - loud ,personal, more direct , use of participatory gestures. Front page/visuals more important than broadsheets.
